I am not one to necessarily give any importance to ‘hallmark holidays’ like fathers day, mothers day, friendship day, etc. (don’t get me started on v-day either). I strongly believe that you don’t need Hallmark to tell you that on such and such date, you tell someone you like them more than anything else in the world, thank a friend for being there to pull you up when you’re feeling down or just thank them for being around for all the great times, thank your Dad for all the sacrifices he made to get you to smile or make sure he gave you the best, or to tell Mom that she’s the greatest. This can be done on any day of the year.
But today, 2 August 08, being ‘friendship day’. I thought it’s time to look back and just take stock of how fortunate and lucky I have truly been to have made some great friends over the years. And more importantly acknowledge and sincerely thank them for being there when I’ve really needed them. They say, friends are those guys who you never have to thank and you can take them for granted to be there when called for. But it never hurts to say, "thanks!"
Will not name names, but you guys know who you are. Thanks for listening to my tantrums and humoring me when needed. Thanks for giving me a patient hearing and tolerating the way I make every small misfortune sound like it’s the end of life all together. Thanks for all the great times spent at the pub, thanks for all the great times at the ice cream parlor, thanks for all the great music we’ve made together, thanks for setting me right when I’ve had wrong ideas or was doing the wrong thing, thanks for yelling at me when I ate like a pig or dropping me home when we had a little too much of a good time with a certain -OH molecule, thanks for coming for the movies you would never watch otherwise, thanks for being quiet while I pulled your leg and not laying a shoe print on my face, thanks for being there through all the peaks and crests of life. Thanks for still talking to me despite our little fights, especially the times I got violent and beat you up. Thanks for understanding when I couldn't come to nice places because i could not afford it and then agreeing to go to a more inexpensive joint. Thanks for standing by me when we got caught by teachers at school and college for all the mischief we made. Thanks for sharing your lunch with me. Thanks for sharing all the movie DVD's, games and other stuff. Thanks for all the toys we shared as kids way back in school. Thanks for still staying in touch even when I tend to get caught up with life and forget to at least say hello once in a while.
I’ve been fortunate enough to see a lot of the world and make lots of friends. But few of them leave such an impact on us that we cant forget them, no matter what. These are the friends you hope will be by your side when your world is actually crashing down around you. And over the years, many of us have grown distant from one another, but someday, out of the blue, our paths might cross, and we’ll still be good friends.
With many of my friends leaving….new country for studies, different companies for better career prospects, getting married, etc etc etc…it does hurt not to stay on touch as much as one would like to, but I guess that’s life. Some promise to stay in touch with you, no matter what, but in reality you always make new friends and old friends sometimes tend to take the backseat. The great thing about friends is that you can always make new ones and still stay in touch with the old ones, and each will be unique in their own way and special to you in their own way.
Thanks guys..for everything!!!
“ What would think if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
He gets high with a little help from his friends,
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends.”
